Introduction to Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 series tablet PCs

Recently, the Korean tablet maker has launched their 7 and 8 inches Android tablets models. Both devices hail from their Galaxy Tab 3 series. Besides these two, the company has also introduced another 10.1 model of this series, which is anticipated to arrive in market in next quarter.

Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 and 10.1 inches tablet PCs

These are the two smallest and biggest sized tablets of Galaxy Tab 3 series. In two of my earlier posts, I have already covered specifications and features of Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 P5210, as well as Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 P3210 tablet models.

Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 3211 tablet PC

The tablet is also known as Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 3G/Wi-Fi/LTE for having all these network supports. This is a powerful tablet, which lies between the two Tab 3 companions. It comes with 3G-ability, WXGA TFT display, a dual core processor and two cameras. To attract the customers, Samsung is going to provide an introductory offer of 2GB per months data free via Vodafone for two month. But customers with only postpaid connections will be eligible to get this offer. On this Samsung tablet, you will also find a large range of useful services including My Games, My Education, My Offers, My Music as well as My Movies.

All the three models are identical for having a 3.5 mm jack and stereo loud speakers. They all have accelerometer and compass, A-GPS support, GLONASS and they will be available to customers in variant colors models of white, black and gold.

Physical dimension

On comparing physical dimension, I found medium sized 8 inch model to be the slimmest (209.8 x 123.8 x 7.4 mm) and 7 inch model to be the thickest (188 x 111.1 x 9.9 mm) among the three and the 10.1 inch model comes with the longest and widest measurement of 243.1 x 176.1 x 7.95 mm. While comparing weight of the tablets, 10.1 inch model is the heaviest (510 gm) and the smallest model is the lightest (306 gm) and the mid-sized model comes with just 314 gm of weight. It shows that the portability of devices decreases with increasing size of devices.

Display comparison

With an 8-inch WXGA TFT capacitive display with 16 million colors, this Tab offers 1,280 x 800 pixels of screen resolution and 189 ppi pixels density.
While talking about its smaller version, it comes with 7-inch WSVGA TFT touch display. It also offers 1,280 x 800 pixels of resolution and lesser 169 ppi pixels density. But the highest 10.1-inch model comes with more 1,376 x 768 pixels and IPS multi touchscreen.

Operating platforms

All the three tabs are Android based machines. The smallest 7.0 inch device runs on Android 4.1 Jelly bean operating system, while the other two models run more advanced Android 7.2 Jelly Bean OS.

Processing capabilities

The smallest unit is powered up by a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor and owns no GPU support hence offers less graphics capabilities, while the mid-sized tablet comes with more powerful dual-core 1.5 GHz Exynos 4212 processor with mali-400MP graphics processing unit (GPU) support. And the third 10.1 inch tablet owns a powerful dual-core 1.6 GHz Intel Atom Z2560 with a PowerVR SGX544MP2 GPU. So, it is clear that the largest model is not only bigger in size but also has highest processing and graphically enhanced capabilities.
A Graphics card with strong graphics processing unit inside enhances any system’s video and gaming capabilities. You can also check the detailed information on this topic in my earlier article on graphics card fundamentals.

RAM and internal storage

While comparing RAM capacity, I found Galaxy TAb 3 8.0 model to be on top with 1.5 GB and the other two have with 1GB capacity. About internal storage, the lowest 7.0 model has 8/16GB on board storage, while the other two come with 16/32 GB. However, the memory of all three devices can be expanded up to 64 GB using micro SD card slot.

Though all the three tablets come with dual cameras but middle 8.0 inches device owns the most powerful primary camera (5MP with 2,560 x 1,920 pixels with auto focus, face detection, geo tagging) among the three. The other two come with the same 3.15 MP (geo-tagging) primary camera with 2,048 x 1,536 pixels quality.
But all the three devices are same in respect to having the same 1.3 megapixel front-end secondary camera.

Networking and connectivity comparison

All the three Tab 3 models support GPRS, EDGE, WLAN Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual band, Wi-Fi Direct, USB 2.0, Wi-Fi hotspot, Infrared as well as 3G/ /LTE network connectivity. Besides these all, you will find Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP on both 8 and 10.1 inches models while the smallest model owns Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP. Both small brother sport HSDPA, 21 Mbps where the biggest model owns HSDPA, 42 Mbps.

Battery support

Battery capacity wise they stand in ascending order with non-removable lithium ion batteries inside. The smallest comes loaded with 4000 mAh battery (with 8 hrs backup), middle with 4450 mAh (with 11 hrs backup) and the biggest with 6800 mAh battery support.

Pricing and availability

Samsung set the price of smallest Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 model at $450 in US market where in Indian market it is available at Rs 17,745 (3G). The customers will require to pay Rs 21,945 for Wi-Fi and Rs 25,725 for the 3G variant of Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 model. And the last 10.1-inch model is anticipated to be priced at US$498 (around Rs 29,480).
Both small models have already been arrived in market while the largest model is still awaited.
This time, Samsung has offered full featured tablets in small packs for its customers. Not only this, their prices are also reasonable as per their technical specifications and features. An intense competition is being anticipated to be raised with arrival of two small models of Galaxy Tab 3. These three models from Samsung are being considered as the tough competitor for Microsoft’s small sized tablets.
